What Is My Curl Type

We're here to help you understand your curl type in order to determine the best curl care
needed to achieve your most beautiful curl pattern with the right products for curly hair.

Kérastase Curl Manifesto Hair Care For Your Curl Type

Curls, curls, everywhere. They come in so many shapes and textures, an infinite spectrum of individual beauty. Each woman wears hers in her own way, a halo of pride and confidence. But what kind of curls do you have, and how does that determine your curl care routine?

Curly hair care professionals talk a lot about “curl pattern.” That’s because not all curly hair has the same shape, and how your hair twists and turns makes a difference in your curl care routine. You can even have different curl shapes in one head of hair. Understanding curl types can help you determine the best course of action toward achieving the healthiest most beautiful curls possible.

Type 2: Wavy Hair / Curly Hair

Curly hair takes on an S shape or winds around a spiral shape. The fiber is thin, so it can easily be weighed down by heavy products. Its loose curl shape does allow natural oils to travel down the shaft, so only a medium amount of extra moisture and nutrition is necessary. An ultra-lightweight conditioner can reduce unwanted frizz and define the curl pattern. We recommend low-heat styling and consistent care to define natural curl movement and keep ends from becoming overprocessed.

Type 3: Very Curly Hair

Very curly hair can come in the form of loose curls or tight, springy corkscrew curls with strands winding closely around themselves. The fiber is more porous and fragile. At the same time, because of the tighter curl shape, it’s more challenging for natural moisture to reach the ends, so very curly hair needs intense hydration and strengthening products such as a hair mask and layered-on leave-in conditioners. We recommend detangling with a wide tooth comb (not a brush) to keep from breaking up the curl pattern. Twisting and pinning hair up before bed is also a good idea, as is sleeping with a silk head wrap or pillowcase.

Type 4: Coily Hair

Coily hair can come in tight corkscrews, or a zig-zag pattern. The curls are very dense near the scalp and loosen a bit toward the ends. Soft and fine or coarse and thick, coily hair is made up of thin fibers that tend to be dry and fragile. Natural oils have a hard time traveling down the shaft, so coily hair requires maximum nutrition, strength and definition that can be achieved with lots of layered products and intense treatment oils that can be left on overnight. We recommend drying with a microfiber towel as well as wrapping the hair in silk at night to prevent breakage.

Curl Considerations

In addition to the shape of your curls, there are other characteristics that can affect the health of curly hair. Porosity, sensitivity and fiber thickness are also factors in how to build the best routine for your curls. Care is also determined by your specific curl goals.
